November Jazz: What Was, and What Is

Well, friends - we're a third into November and it's hard to believe that the holidays are upon us. Everywhere we turn, there's something to do, see, eat, drink, listen to and enjoy. Because my update is late I've missed a few shows but I'm going to tell you about them anyway, plus let you know about some things that you MUST check out going forward....

What We Missed:
Graham Dechter Trio a couple of nights ago in Calabasas. I met Graham at the LA Jazz Society Annual Tribute Concert in October after having heard this 20-year-old guitarist play with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on at least one other occasion. I had the opportunity to hang out with him on the Jazz Cruise a couple of weeks ago and had tons of fun getting to know this talented character. Keep an ear to the ground for this one, folks.

Bill Cunliffe with John Chiodini at Giannelli Square last night. I had theater tickets and wasn't able to make this gig, but I've been dying to check out the space and Bill Cunliffe is always a slam dunk when it comes to swingin' piano standards as well as engaging original music. Don't miss him next time!

What's Coming Up:
Tuesday, November 14: Kristin Korb is the featured guest at the standing Tuesday night "Tasty Gig" at Catalina's. She sings, plays the bass, and dazzles the crowd with her upbeat interpretations and engaging stage presence. You'll love her. Go check her out!

Saturday and Sunday, November 18 & 19: The Upstairs Studio Presents "A TAP TRIBUTE TO JAZZ" at The Miles Playhouse in Santa Monica. This event is a fundraiser for the LA Jazz Society plus features Flip Manne, our fearless leader, dear friend and former Rockette. All I can manage to say is "WOO HOO!!!". Click here for more details.

Sunday, November 19: Tamir Hendelman solo at LA Atelier. Apparently this garden setting is phenomenal and of course Tamir's one of my favorite musicians ever. It promises to be a great show with classically-influenced jazz (among other things - Tamir promises "surprises") so you won't be sorry if you get out there!

Sunday, December 3: I know it's still November, but SAVE THE DATE for the LA Jazz Society's Holiday Brunch! It features a Jazz Christmas Celebration bythe Jazz Compass Stable (Clay Jenkins, trumpet; Dave Koonse, guitar; Tom Ranier, piano; Tom Warrington, bass; Joe LaBarbera, drums plus special guests) and promises to be a lovely afternoon. Be there or be L7!!

That's just the tip of the iceberg; as always, feel free to email me with show suggestions or if you're looking for a jazz buddy!!
